Tutor Claire’s English Revision Tips for Parents.

GCSE English Language/Literature
April 2025

● Make sure your child has their notes in order for each text. For literature’s Of Mice & Men
for example, ensure that your child has a quote page for key characters and the themes
they may fit into within the novel. They need to learn these as it is a closed book exam!

● For poetry, make sure your child has read and re-read their anthology of poems and
understands what theme they fit into and what poems pair with each other for the exam.
Eg, ‘Belfast Confetti’ marries well with ‘Docker’ on the theme of how place can influence
identity.

● Have a study timetable for the Easter break and study leave so that your child can fill it in
to dedicate their study. A timetable ensures that your child is spending enough time on
each subject and the routine really does help.

● Flashcards for tips and tricks for the language exam is helpful, especially for language
devices (make sure they know them all fully)

● Past papers are available on the CCEA website along with their mark schemes, these are
very helpful for revision(see link below)

Where else can I find help?

Below is a list of really useful websites and pages to aid your child’s revision and ongoing
learning.

https://thinklit.co.uk/

This fantastic website is for all the CCEA poetry anthologies of ‘Identity’, ‘Conflict’ and
‘Relationships’. It contains analysis of each poem and advice on how to answer the poetry exam
question.

chemes

This is the CCEA website for all past papers and mark schemes. Browsing through these papers
will help your child understand the layout of each exam paper to familarise themselves. They
can also try some practice questions and check the mark scheme to mark their work.
